Trend Alert: Romcomcore

Channeling Main Character Energies

A diaphanous dress in soft pink florals and ruffled shoulder straps, paired with a mini cardigan – the latest romantic fashion trend has women dress like their favorite ’00s romantic comedy character. The rising #romcomcore trend is curating outfits to make everyday moments look and feel like the scenes from one of the 2000’s iconic romcoms.

Today, people want to romanticize their lives. The predictable storylines and happy endings provide a comforting escape to many and offers much needed soothing within our zeitgeist. Not to forget, romcom fashion is fun. An aspect that has gotten lost within the seriousness that is overacting the industry facing declining resources and sustainable thinking.

Next to the slip dress and the mini cardigan, other staples complete the romantic look. Romcomcore builds on tube tops, low-waist pants, bustier and corset tops, cut-out and criss-cross tops, tanks, see-through or mesh anything, chokers and claw clips – all in a Y2K spirit.

However, rom-com core is more than slinky dresses and baby tops, the trend that has taken over celebrity looks, streetstyle and TikTok, is more than a fashion trend and has a social component. While the romcoms that debuted 30 years ago usually featured rather toxic relationships, they present strong and feminine female characters as well. These leading ladies were not afraid to be bold and go after what they wanted, fully in line with current expressions of femininity.
