SS23 Men: Design Themes

Gentle Gardener. The appeal of horticulture and a more balanced life is connecting designers this season. For Summer 2023, design stories depict a softly tinted garden of calm. Imagining a summer of planting vegetables, growing roses and resting in the shadow of the trees sets the setting for new design. The balance of utilitarian and outdoor elements and the more poetic feel of the countryside create a fresh and uplifting narrative for the next season. Dreamy botanics and floral prints coexist with soft camouflages for a feminine touch to classic masculine garments. Modular and functional silhouettes meet subtle fabrics and gentle color harmonies for an inspiring hybrid look. Aprons, vests and reinterpreted rain-gear are crucial and appropriate the look for transitional periods.

Need for Speed. The #Motorcore momentum is strongly affecting menswear collections for SS23. As consumers are still trying to catch up on missed experiences from the past years, they look towards experiences of adrenaline rush more than ever. It is all about being faster, stronger, better now, a mindset that is quite literally affecting design with fresh fuel. Leather and armor details are celebrating their big return, while dopamine color highlights are elevating classic motorcycle black and whites. The finish-line checkerboard moves into focus and bold zippers are adding a feel of sturdiness and masculinity. For a more fashionable and contemporary look, fitted silhouettes, crops and mini leather shorts can add a more edgy styling choice and integrate a new understanding of masculinity in such a traditionally male narrative.

Fresh Linen. Summer 23 is all about feeling refreshed and reborn and about being ready for the next chapter. Consequently, the pure feeling of clean sheets and the appeal of post bathing or showers fuse into a design story that remains the fresh sensation for the whole day. The focus on well-being and restfulness is integral to this concept and reflects on daring issues of contemporary society. Block stripes are returning in classic shades of blue for a distinct pyjama look and meet with silky satins to resonate a new boudoir moment. Matching sets, boxer-shorts and classic shirts are essentials, while more daring bathing ropes and towel-like drape elements can be introduced for the most fashion-forward client. Soft handles and tranquil color harmonies build the base for those looks and a focus on natural fibers, such as linen, cotton and hemp is emphasizing the desire for purity.

Venice Beach. This design story of skate and surf is taking us to the beach boulevard of LA. The gloomy style of LA with influences of free-minded glam rock and streetwear grunge is pulsating underneath collections. With surfing and skating attracting more and more active consumers, those waterfront activities are drawing on their subcultural references for a distinct style. Summer 2023 will see the return of baggy silhouettes, however embellished with tropical motifs of waves and palm trees. Shell necklaces of the surfer boy meet long and baggy skate bermudas for a Y2K-influenced silhouette. From glitters to mesh, a nigh-life vibe is guiding textile choices and a blue-tinted color palette is taking looks to the next beach party. From printed totes, cool kid glasses and slip on shoes, the young and lated-back LA vibe is resonating through all of the pieces.

Rodeo Resort. The appeal of western looks is strongly connected to a new sense of masculinity that has been taking hold of the menswear market. While those fitted and fancy silhouettes are resurfacing the heritage of classic Americana they do not feel outdated but fashion-forward and relevant during our current times. The good old days are allowing consumers to dive into the American Dream again, stepping into settings of 70’s resorts that promised a better world of success and prosperity. New looks envision line-dance nights, poker rooms and cigars as well as a glorious rodeo night. Traditional flares, embroidered silk shirts and western panelling are juxtaposing with boxy shirts and blazers for a more relaxed look or go all-out for a more authentic cowboy chic. Western boots and cowboy hats become highlights for eccentric and dressed-up styling, while contemporary color palettes are grounding on the mood-boosting and fun vibe of the moment.

Eternal Gods. The previous seasons have already indicated a turn towards the spiritual and religious. As consumers desire more purpose and mindfulness and an overall deeper sense of their being, this continuation of mystical and otherworldly stories for design is becoming paramount. From ancient religions to christianity to the tales of greek gods and heavenly creatures, men are turning into such eternal figures for SS23 themselves. Neutral color palettes, gentle glitters and shine are setting the textile story for the look. With revealing, body-liberating silhouettes, outfits seem inspired by ancient paintings and statues and return a focus on to the beauty of the male body. Wrapped in fluid silhouettes, prints focus on biblical and mythological sceneries, various wings or angel references or mere statue depictions to embed this distinctly metaphorical look.

Bad student. The menswear market has already opened-up to the idea of the #kidult over the past seasons. The appeal of child-like ease and freedom connects with consumers who are strongly driven to regain their full freedom and be unapologetically themselves. Reminiscing in their childhood, connects client to their creativity, experimental nature and effortless thinking in order to take their minds off the concerns and anxiety from the real world. Stylistically the academic look creates a back to school style of block stripes, varsity and tailoring. This classic and put-together style now mixes with arts&craft for a disruptive new look. Artsy prints, patchworks and raw hemlines are breaking formal codes and appropriate the design concept for 2023 clients.

Cyber Dreams. Stepping into the utopia of our dreams, this pastel-tinted design story is reflecting on consumer’s focus on otherworldly embargoes and the exploration of dreamsttates. Fusing a spacey explorer look with cloud-like lucidity proposes a novel aesthetic to consumers and looks towards the future and the possibilities of innovation in a more grounded, less eccentric way than the hyped, neon meta-worlds of previous seasons have proposed. Modular design is smoothed-out with gentle palettes, soft blurs and a lustrous sheen. This modern traveller opts for casual and contemporary tailoring and proposes light business-ready staples for a heated summer season. Futuristic accessories, in terms of foam slides, innovative sneakers and sleek racing or shielding shades are key to tie this new look together. The pastel palette is gentle, yet looks towards subtly augmented digital hues to retain an innovative edge and propose novelty for the market.
