Inspired by near and far. From a quantitative point of view, prints have decreased by -14% in visibility and patterns by -8% during FW23 fashion shows.
This season, the new minimalist business look is proposing a range full of essentials for a timeless and long-lasting wardrobe. Taking inspiration from the repertoire of traditional classics, this seasonal direction is taking prints and patterns back to seasonless styles. Tailoring checks, pinstripes, black & white graphics and polka dots are the strongest direction, but not without stupefying interpretations. Flowers are decreasing leaving space for interesting, indefinite abstracts, reminiscent of erosions or new camouflages, bringing materiality while remaining highly commercial. Nostalgia is hidden into bucolic flowers, reminding tapestry or historical interior. In the same vein, the citation of ancient and classical techniques such as ikat, moiré, dévoré are noteworthy. Digital fascination is always well present. As distortion of reality, interpreting tachist or floral motifs, all rather blurry and watercolor style; and in the other hand, photographic prints are playing trompe l’œil on garments. The season’s biggest challenge will be reinterpreting classic, evergreen motifs with a contemporary twist in order to know how to arouse the buying impulse in an age of understatement.
