FW21 Outerwear Analysis

Global Assortment

For FW21 the outerwear category accounted for 6,3% of global assortments. This season, outerwear performed above average with 57% out-of-stock rates for coats and jackets.  More precisely, outerwear products went out of stock within an average of 45 days. Overall, the category has shown a sensibility for consumers’ desire for reassuring properties and a more pronounced fashionability.

Leading the range, casual tailoring coats are composing 43% of the mix. Outdoor jackets represents 31% of the assortment showing leather and shearling style, meanwhile the shaket stays as a mainstream big trend.

Another stand-out style of the winter season are quilted coats and puffers, taking nearly 10% of the outerwear range. Oversized, voluminous style contrasted the cropped style, at waistline or even shorter.
Talking about volume pieces, the fur coat has shown to be the best commercial trend across FW21 outerwear.

Other category highlights include the vest that contributes to 3,9% of outerwear and the poncho for 2%. Both styles are ideal for high-demand layering looks. Such sleeveless outerwear grew by +2,97 PTS this year and performed the best in terms of out-of-stock rate, with 80% of styles being sold-out after an average of 42 days.
The taste for versatile and functional pieces is also demonstrated by utility designed parkas, accounting for 2% of the range. Practical and outdoors-ready properties, classical looks and stylish layering pieces are the top trends for the category across FW21 collections.

The Casual Tailoring Coat

Leading the range, casual tailoring coats are composing 43% of the mix and demonstrate how more elevated and timeless styles are on demand. With a performance rate of 60% out-of-stock, such coats are a mainstay for each successful collection.

The Puffer

Stand-out style are quilted coats and puffers, which grew by +5,3 PTS compared to the previous winter season and sold out at 55%. Their cocooning properties are offering a sense of protectiveness and warmth as consumers are experiencing the outdoors during wintertime again.

The Fur Coat

The fur coat has been the must-have piece of the season, strongly influenced by the recent runways. It has demonstrated to be the best performing trendy item across FW21 outerwear, running out of stock in only 37 days.

The vest represents 3,9% of outerwear is the new functional piece to style the looks. Ideal for layering vests grew by +2,97 PTS compared to last year and performed the best in terms of out-of-stock rate, with 80% of styles being sold-out after an average of 42 days.

Global Color Palette

While most categories are booming with sparkles and occasion-ready glitz, outerwear is feeling more casual and laid-back than ever. Contemporary yet stylized lines are dominating the product group and introduce a genderless and long-lasting mindset. Looks are made for everyday dressing and build exciting contrasts with evening-ready outfits underneath. Still, outerwear  has shown a tendency to integrate more fashionable choices in the mix. While classic colors accounted for 57% of the category, fashionable colors composed the remaining 43%. Within the classic range black is leading with 47%, followed by 31% of neutrals. When looking at the entire range, neutrals and black are making up almost half of the offering, which comes as no surprise as consumers keep desiring long-lasting and transpersonal styles. The turn towards nature has sparked an intense focus in browns and greens, with khaki and medium green being the strongest. Adding an optimistic sense of digital spheres, blues are returning in bolder nuances. Within the fashion colors, blue is offering 12% of the range. Not to forget, the turn towards feminism and Y2K themes spiked pink colors to 9% and red to 8% of the fashion color mix.

Fabrics & Composition

Tactility and textures have returned from the pandemic as fashion’s most sought for attributes. For FW21, the fur coat showed to be the best performing trendy outerwear style of the season. With a growth of +6,2 PTS compared to the previous year, the fur style showed a 53% out-of-stock rate within just 37 days. Talking about fashionable styles, the quilted look is leading the material category. Padded puffers or softer long coats and vests have turned into a statement style icon of the season. From glossy padding to matte organic quilting, the possibilities of the material are endless. And while the puffer provides a maximum of warmth during winter times, the creative possibilities of padding and quilting leave enough room for self expression. Leather coats and jackets composed for 5,3% within all outerwear pieces and continue to commercialize a sturdy and timeless runway trend. Leather coats increased by +3,7PTS and performed with a 42% out-of-stock rate, showing that the material has stabilized as a trend. As clients were longing for tradition and craft during the pandemic, some of such nostalgic styles are remaining prominent on the market. Jacquard, moving from tapestry to ethnic styles, accounts for 3,7% of outerwear fabrics, while tweeds are renewed with fancy and colorful yarns and remain at 2,6% of the product segment.

Prints & Patterns

For FW21, 8% of the outerwear offer showed to be printed, demonstrating a +1,5 PTS growth compared to FW20. As printed styles remain stable, the outerwear segment is showing a strong interest in updating classics print designs. With a sense for more purposeful product silhouettes, color and print are able to add the desired need to dress up with joy to the category. Leading are checks, representing 24% of prints. However, this season the checks feel more fresh than ever, from cabin-core ready plaids to youthful checkerboard styles, the classic is finding several variations in more and more exciting color combinations. Animal prints are one of the most iconic statements and this season their combination with furry designs is creating wild and nature-ridden looks. With stripes and florals composing each around 8-9% of outerwear prints, familiar graphic designs are responding to reassuring consumer needs. For florals, bold styles are the most fashionable, while ethnic and pinstripes are essential for trend-aware stripe designs. Houndstooth is beginning to make its big revival and infuse fashion with a distinct preppyness again. The print balances graphic modernity and timelessness like no other and promises to be strong throughout the upcoming seasons as well. Looking towards general print trends, monograms are maintaining their commercial appeal with 5% of category share. Their value, especially with growing resell  markets, is gaining importance. With cabin core influences, autumnal patchwork and camp, as well as bohemian paisley are some of the more trendy patterns as well.

Style Details

As silhouettes focus more on timelessness and cocooning forms for FW21, the details are essential to balance out and enhance certain styles. For all the new casual coats and jackets that incorporate tailoring elements on relaxed silhouettes, soft belts remain key and are one of the strongest details with a share of 11,7% of all details. The belt adds a sense of softness and femininity to various styles and therefore answers to a new consumer sensibility. As utility is still high on the agenda, performance details, such as the patch-pocket and drawstring, add practicality to garments that equip consumers for outdoors adventures and both remaining stable trends. With trends for dressing-up and culture high on demand, the fringe has grown by +0,1 PTS from the past year and shows to be a favorite trend from simple to bold executions. As cropped styles are a top trend for the top category since several seasons now, recent runways have demonstrated their applicability for outerwear as well. Across e-commerces, cropped outerwear is gaining commercial value, showing a +2,1% increase compared to last year. Especially for bomber jackets, puffers and vests, the cropped silhouette creates fashionable pieces for sets and layering looks that adapt to transpersonal periods.

Outerwear Market Trends

Outerwear is a fundamental category for a successful winter collection. Market trends show that there is still a great deal of commitment to classic pieces, as consumers are looking for reassuring and versatile products that they can wear for a long time and for which they are willing to invest. Insert utility details and layering-ready items to upgrade the looks emphasising functionality and practicality. Puffers and cocooning shapes have been trending and certainly statement voluminous puffer are today commercial pieces. Do not forget fur-like product that are certainly not going to lose their appeal for next year. Teddy, Shearling and Faux-fur are materials you cannot miss, even just for details.
In terms of pricing, during FW21, outerwear has shown a price of 428,50€ related to the premium market with 5,51% on discount rate. Comparing to mass-market, where global outerwear range was at 89€.
