The Y2K trend is taking an even more intense direction with the latest drops of nylon cargos and baggy parachute pants. Influencers are loving this lightweight, baggy style that could be deemed a relative to cargo pants. But unlike the structured, utility-influenced cargo pant, parachute pants have a loose, drawstring fit at the waist and ankle (like a literal parachute). Originally popularized by the hip-hop and breakdancing scene, we’re now seeing a modern-day rebirth of the billowy pants courtesy of TikTok. Search rates for the product are strong, showing more than +100% yearly growth on parachute pants and even +250% for parachute cargos. The visibility on Instagram is massive, growing +614% compared to last year. While the trend is mainly hitting the younger and fashionable masstige market around Gen-Z at the moment, designers like Isabel Marant and Bec & Bridge are showing how the style can fuse into more sophisticated silhouettes. With lightness and fluidity, the parachute pant is able to turn into a more chic women style pant, reducing volumes and baggyness, keeping drawstring at ankles with delicate add-ons.
