The FW22 fabric assortment proposed a varied range, where elegant fabrics coexist with rougher styles and textured surfaces. Celebrating a return to tactility and authenticity feels liberating as they lacked in recent years. Previous winter seasons rediscovered knitwear to elevate comfort and push for a hybridization between different occasions. Business casual characterized the first post-pandemic moment and prevails with elegant and luxe fabric attributes. Talking about luxury and feeling good, an entire textile range intended for festive occasions was featured on the FW22 runways. With partying and gatherings slowly restoring, designer’s interest towards a forgotten elegance intensifies.
FW22 pointed out how fashion is nostalgically reaching through a glowing glam, which was lost over the decades, weakened by the streetwear predominance of recent years and, ultimately, by the total absence of social life during the pandemic. The textile mood is an ode to new femininity, which became evident within the Fendi show: a longing for the past embellished by delicate sheers and dreamy fabrics set to celebrate beauty and vanity: frivolous, and exuberant fused with strength and power of leather and tailoring.
According to Livetrend’s data, here are the top trends within the textile range from the FW22 shows. Knitwear is a must-have, presented in more than 1600 looks of the last runway. Snuggly textiles were applied through long shaggy coats and teddy fleeces as seen at Gucci, Helmut Lang and Claudia Lim, with the latter material growing 5% YoY in the market. Fluffy fabrics in bright and natural colorways were prevalent across Fall 2022 shows. Countless designers have pivoted away from using real fur (Saint Laurent showcased its first collection with faux fur), appealing to the modern consumer who no longer views it as a status symbol. The result is alerady visible in market data where number of styles containing real fur in stock has fallen 44% YoY.
Sparkling and shiny fabrics have established partywear presence gaining 16% YoY and sequins are leading the way with 44% increase, while metallic hue are rising 9%. At the same time, away from this form of escapism from the reality, where Russia-Ukraine war reminds us how fragile is our future, Fall 2022 will signal workwear’s long-awaited comeback. Designers juxtaposing sleek minimalism to nostalgic or sharp lines. The FW22 collections showed more traditional, pre-pandemic office attire than the elevated workleisure we are used to seeing, comfort elements need to remain incorporated to suit hybrid lifestyles.
From rediscovered elegance to humbled craft and powerful rigidity, the shows provide a versatile range for collections. One message is clear though, contrasting feminine subtleness with masculine harshness creates the much-needed contrast for collections that are 2022-ready.
