2019 summer marks the square toe’s big return to the fashion mainstream.
Fashion isn’t done with rebirthing all things from ’90s. Another sweeping retro prodigy comes to the fore: the square toe, a trend that’s been quietly bubbling away while the super strappy, exaggeratedly pointy shoes of the decade have taken centre stage. That is, until spring/summer 2019, when a bevy of the biggest footwear names are resolutely championing its transformative power as the footwear trend of the season.
Net à porter has already sold close to 11,000 pairs this season. Now it is certain that looking at your Instagram feed (14.8k post), the summer sandals have a square toe.
Luxury houses have proposed their styles: Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, Fendi and so on. Then there is the wave of independent shoe brands championing the square shape through the prism of the Nineties throwback style – By Far, Neous and Rejina Pyo’s mule sandals are winning this spring.
We are surprised not to see accessible luxury propose and promote this type of shoe. Certainly a challenge for the next season as we watch the first designer styles coming out.
