PreFall 21:Textile Highlights

Patterns & Prints

Pre-Fall 21 patterns emphasizes the positive side of change, of variability. The transformation of influences, the fluidity of genres and styles, and the notion of life as evolving are key to this season. The patterns and graphics also reflect on the zeitgeist. We see romantic and bold brocades continuing the nostalgia trend, while heritage checks are updated with bold color combinations or enlarged scales. The ditsy florals on dark base elevate the #cottagecore trend to a more mystical level and invite us to tell stories of ancient fantasy dreamscapes. Similarly dreamy, yet more conceptual, are the evolving abstract structures. For those, a natural influence is evident in both compositions and visuals, with elegant irregularities, subtle wash-outs, softly sunny shades. These structures update the prevailing tie&dye stories and create an aesthetic reminiscent of sediments, nature and surreal universes. Abstract structures are reflecting quite literally on the escapist and uncertain mood of our zeitgeist.

Textiles & Treatments

The lack of touch and tactility is becoming very obvious, when we look at the top materials and textile treatments for Pre-Fall 21. A sexy sustainability teamed with resolute lightness underlines the pursuit of an absolute comfort that proudly vaunts its charm. Soft and slinky satin and silk are certainly trending materials, alluding to sleepwear and lingerie.
The textured appearance of the fabrics is of increasing importance and so a variety of textured materials enhance the visual aspect and the tactility of the garments. Printed yarns, tweeds, jacquards cloqués and quilted materials generate this much-demanded feel. In that sense, Livetrend technology has already detected a rising number of plissé on Instagram and the trend has been confirmed during these Pre-fall collections.
New experimental material for faux-fur are rising, as recycled polyester and even some are recycled from vegetal origin fibers.
After months lead by comfort and practicality, confirmed by data, where the number of searches for women’s gowns was x2 in 2020, x3 for oversize outfits (particularly very dynamic in France), some pieces may suggest a more romantic and dressy sentiment. This more flamboyant and cheerful mindset is similarly reflected by an increased amount of bejeweled garments, may that be unexpected loungewear pieces and knit or evening-ready clothing.

PreFall 21 Design Influences

While the global impacts of 2020 events were unexpected and harsh, the emotions of uncertainty, overload and a dreaming for better days will keep dominating the sentiment of upcoming seasons. With their Pre-Fall 21 collections, designers have responded in more commercial ways to the ongoing impact of current circumstances, which makes sense regarding the recessionary state of society. A lot of trends, that we have previously seen (checks, animalier and natural structures) have been evolved or increased and stabilized to reassure an uncertain client. The general tenor however seemed to seek powerfulness and individuality within new interpretation, as the chess checks, which update the traditional patterns.
To notice that laser-printed denim are an hot edgy trend. Livetrend already detected the eary signals of it, but in these prefalls this trend has grownt 400% yoy. Bejeweled trend is also on of the biggest novelty compared to prefall 20, scoring +500% yoy. This trend will have a big magnitude for FW21, as we reported on Trim trend : Bejeweled.

On the top left, you can find the forecasting icon obtained by analyzing the prefall collections. For these collections we did not publish the growth index since, due to the pandemic, some prefalls were not shown and many collections were smaller. We did not feel it was coherent to publish a definitive growth index number, but more of a trend tendency. We remain at your disposal to provide further data.
