FW21 Print Highlight: Gardens of Dark Delights

In the Shadows of Red Roses

Let’s get taken into the magical world of allegory and myth.

FW21 is not going to be a big season for prints. Instead, designers are focusing much more on the texture and tactility of materials. However, some pattern narratives are still able to grab attention for the next autumnal season and continue to explore the poetic language that is embedded within 2D graphics. Livetrend technology has detected florals as one of the main trend patterns for the upcoming fall/winter season. It was featured in 733 looks during the recent runway shows. With a slightly declining growth index of -10%, the print maintains stable properties, considering the general decrease of patterns of the season.

Spiking interests for nostalgic themes and nature-driven design stories are now shifting floral prints towards more ancient botanical or interior-inspired interpretations. In line with this transformation, the print trend: Garden of Dark Delights is hitting the mark. The mystified notion of our zeitgeist demands for the dreamscape-interpretations of romantic rose prints on dark surfaces. The seductive and gloomy appeal of these florals embraces the current consumer sentiments of desire, intimacy, fear and uncertainty – all at once. The rather romantic feel in combination mainly with evening-looks, can also be linked to resurfacing ballet and theatre themes. In terms of color, passionate red and the dark seduction off black balance new ideas on sexiness and empowered femininity. Escape into those gardens of hidden fantasies and swift into softly romantic or slightly rebellious daydreams. FW21 will be a season for the poetics, the star-gazers, the visionaries and believers and this print-trend certainly embraces those spirits.
